The HIBC Barcode Family: Formats, Uses and Free Generation
HIBC — the Health Industry Barcoding Council standard — defines a compact data structure for medical products: a primary string identifying the labeler and product/catalog number, optional secondary data for lot and expiry, and a checksum. The same structure rides on several carriers, keeping the data portable across linear and 2D symbols.
Code 128 and Code 39 serve shipping cartons and outer labels; Data Matrix, QR, Aztec and the PDF417 family mark small unit packs and devices where space is tight. HIBC remains the de facto standard for US medical manufacturers and coexists with GS1 healthcare rules.
