The Retail Barcode Family: Formats, Uses and Free Generation
The retail family covers the GTIN numbers that identify trade items at points of sale worldwide. Every symbol in this group encodes a number licensed from GS1 (or a compatible national body), and each carries a mod-10 check digit so a mistyped number can never quietly become a valid-looking code.
The variants differ by shape and purpose: UPC-A and EAN-13 mark individual sale items, UPC-E compresses a zero-suppressed GTIN-12 for tiny packs, ISBN carries book prefixes, while ITF-14, EAN-14 and NVE-18 identify shipping containers and logistics units rather than shelf items.
